ROCKFORD- Gerald S. Baxter-, 83 passed away peacefully on Friday, March 15, 2013, at OSF St. Anthony Hospital after battling cancer. Born November 28th, 1929, in Rockford to Stewart and Francis (Ryman) Baxter. He was a graduate of East High School and a veteran of the U.S..Army serving in the Korean War. Gerald joined the Rockford Fire Department where he worked for over 20 years. Later he took pride in working for several companies until he finally retired from The Board of Education. He enjoyed his friends, fishing, gardening, travel, and let’s not forget his loyalty to the Chicago Cubs and Bears. He was also a member of the LLL Society for 50 years along with several other organizations in Rockford. He is survived by his partner for over 40 years, Pat Dolan; sons, Al, Scottsdale, Arizona, and Dale Baxter, Rockford, Illinois; seven grand children. He is predeceased by sisters, Phylis Brown, and Beverly Larson; and grandson Corey. A special thank you to Debra, Stacey, Carrol and his wonderful nurses. A celebration of life gathering from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at the Blackhawk Athletic Club, 2023 Broadway in Rockford, of which he was a member.
